Making good on its previous announcement of bringing Nintendo properties to mobile devices, Nintendo is reportedly introducing a Legend of Zelda smartphone game soon. According to The Wall Street Journal, sources close to Nintendo say a Zelda-themed smartphone title could come as early as 2018.
The plan to introduce classic franchises to mobile gamers isn't anything new, not by a long shot, but the idea of a Zelda mobile game is. Previously we knew there would be an Animal Crossing game coming after both Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes made their respective debuts, but the idea that a Zelda game could be on its way is an exciting and new revelation.
Considering the massive success of Fire Emblem Heroes and Super Mario Run before it, even though this isn’t an official announcement by way of Nintendo just yet, it’s a safe bet that this is likely in the cards, so you can go ahead and let yourself get a little hyped up. Although it’s a little unclear as to what we might be able to expect from a mobile Zelda title.
Could it be a series of bite-sized adventures like Half-Minute Hero? Maybe a series of vignettes? Only time will tell. For now, it’s an exciting prospect nevertheless. We'll report further details as they arise.
